What to Expect from the Online MBA@Simmons

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the program must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. GMAT/GRE scores are not required, but can be submitted optionally. At least one year of professional work experience is required. Candidates must submit an online application and fee, official transcripts, and a current resume. Students whose first language is not English must send TOEFL or IELTS scores.

In addition, students must submit one essay of 500 to 1,000 words detailing their reasons for pursuing an MBA@Simmons, including how their professional experience has prepared them for success in the program, short-term and long-term career goals, and a leadership experience example. They also must have two letters of recommendation, including at least one from a supervisor (preferably from a current position), addressing goals, leadership potential, oral and written communication skills, and one’s ability to work independently.

Study Plan: The online MBA@Simmons starts in January, July, and October. Students can complete the program in 24 months, part-time, taking two courses per term. Some students choose to take one course per term. There are four terms available every 12 months. Classes meet online weekly, and class size is generally limited to 15 students.

Curriculum: The MBA@Simmons consists of 48 credits: 14 MBA courses, two elective courses, and two immersion experiences of one credit each. The degree program begins with a non-credit foundations of business course that is a self-paced orientation to the program. This course is designed to foster student success in the MBA program and covers a variety of business topics such as communication skills, business terms, modeling through Excel spreadsheets, and discussing business case scenarios. MBA courses include financial reporting and analysis; economic analysis for managers; leading individuals and groups; managerial accounting; quantitative analysis; strategic thinking and analytical decision-making; and several more. Electives are taken toward the end of the program.

Applicants who wish to improve their quantitative skills before beginning the full MBA programs or who have been away from the classroom for an extended period of time may take the pre-MBA course. Students who are accepted provisionally must take this course.

Online Experience: Students in the online MBA program experience live, face-to-face, weekly classes that allow for interactive learning and discussion. Students are then given interactive assignments that must be completed by the next week’s class. Assignments may include answering discussion questions, watching recorded lectures, and uploading video responses. All classes are recorded so students can view them at any time. Small class sizes allow for full engagement with faculty and other students during class as well as in small, break-out discussion groups that foster collaboration and teamwork.

On-Site Requirements: MBA@Simmons students attend two in-person, multi-day immersion experiences in Boston or other cities around the country. Each immersion is worth one credit. These experiences promote collaboration, teamwork, and networking. Students also can participate in workshops from prominent global and local business leaders, and are able to apply their learned knowledge to real-world business situations in hands-on experiences.

Paying for the Online MBA@Simmons

Simmons University charges $1,400 per credit for the MBA@Simmons, plus immersion experience costs, books, and other fees. Tuition changes from year to year, so online students should contact the admissions department of the Simmons School of Management for a customized assessment.

Simmons University graduate students can apply for federal loans, merit and need-based scholarships, need-based grants, and private loans, as well as outside scholarships and awards from employers, professional organizations, community entities, and the like. Military aid is also available. Please note that some businesses offer tuition reimbursement programs for employees seeking an MBA.
