Boston University Metropolitan College Online Master’s Degree Programs

Boston University’s (BU) Metropolitan College offers seven 100 percent online masters-level business programs in the following areas: applied business analytics, enterprise risk management, financial management with international finance or investment analysis concentrations, global marketing management, insurance management, project management with an optional concentration in program & project portfolio management, and supply chain management with optional concentrations in analytics, logistics management, and risk management concentrations. All MS business degrees through BU can be completed in 12 to 20 months except for the insurance management MS degree, which is designed to be completed in 16 months.

In addition to the MS degrees, Metropolitan College offers corresponding graduate certificates plus corporate finance, international finance, and project, program & portfolio management. Those who earn a graduate certificate may apply the completed courses to the full corresponding MS degree. These can be completed in 6 to 9 months and include four courses each.

Because Metropolitan College participates in the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program, the curriculum for the MS in financial management program and concentrations includes much of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK). In addition, the curriculum imparts the standards from the CFA Standards of Practice Handbook. The financial management program thoroughly prepares graduates for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) examinations.

It is important to note that the MS in insurance management is designed for those who already hold certification as a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). This degree can be completed in just 16 months and includes eight courses.

Boston University is accredited through the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). All of the MS in business programs and graduate certificates covered here are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). What to Expect from the Boston University Online Business Programs

Boston University Online Master's Programs in Business

Admission Requirements: Prospective students for the MS or graduate certificate programs must have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. No work experience or GMAT/GRE scores are required. Applicants must submit an application and fee, resume or CV, official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and proof of English language proficiency if necessary.

Study Plan: The Boston University online MS in business programs can be completed in 12 to 20 months except for the MS in insurance management, which is designed to be completed in 16 months. The graduate certificates can be completed in 6 to 9 months. Start dates for online programs land in the fall, spring, and summer, with two start dates per semester.

MS in Applied Business Analytics Curriculum: The Boston University MS in applied business analytics comprises 40 credits covered in 10 courses. Students must complete the online pre-analytics laboratory as a prerequisite for business analytics foundations.

Core courses include business analytics foundations; operations management: business process fundamentals; quantitative and qualitative decision making; and financial concepts. If students have not completed the prerequisite course pre-analytics laboratory, they must do so before taking the course business analytics foundations.

Specialization courses include enterprise risk analytics; web analytics for business; data mining for business analytics; and marketing analytics. Those who have already earned the graduate certificate in applied business analytics are eligible to waive these four courses.

Business analytics students then choose two elective courses from the administrative sciences or other approved courses.

MS in Enterprise Risk Management Curriculum: The Boston University MS in enterprise risk management program comprises 40 credits over 10 courses. Core courses include financial concepts; quantitative and qualitative decision-making; project management; and the innovation process: developing new products and services.

Specialization courses include enterprise risk management and business continuity management plus two of the following: enterprise risk planning and compliance; disaster management; and capstone project in enterprise risk management. Those who have already earned the graduate certificate in enterprise risk management are eligible to waive the specialization courses.

Enterprise risk management students then choose two elective courses from approved courses.

MS in Financial Management Curriculum: The MS in financial management program comprises 40 credits through 10 courses. There are also two concentrations to choose from as described below. Core courses include financial and managerial accounting; quantitative methods for finance; financial regulation and ethics; and corporate finance. Specialization courses include financial markets and institutions; mergers and acquisitions; and investment analysis and portfolio management plus one of the following: case studies in current corporate financial topics; fixed-income analysis; multinational finance and trade; and derivative securities and markets. Financial management students then choose two elective courses from several approved courses.

  • International Finance Concentration Courses: Students in the international finance concentration must take the core courses listed above for the financial management MS plus concentration courses and electives. Concentration courses include case studies in current corporate financial topics; investment analysis and portfolio management; and multinational finance and trade plus one of the following: financial markets and institutions; derivative securities and markets; mergers and acquisitions; and fixed-income analysis. Two electives are then chosen from a list of approved electives.
  • Investment Analysis Concentration Courses: Students in the investment analysis concentration must take the core courses listed above for the financial management MS plus specialization courses and electives. Concentration courses include derivative securities and markets; investment analysis and portfolio management; and fixed-income analysis plus one of the following: case studies in current corporate financial topics; financial markets and institutions; multinational finance and trade; and mergers and acquisitions. Two electives are then chosen from a list of approved electives.

MS in Global Marketing Management Curriculum: The MS in global marketing management program comprises 40 credits covered in 10 courses. Core courses include financial concepts; quantitative and qualitative decision-making; project management; and the innovation process: developing new products and services. Specialization courses include e-commerce; international business, economics, and cultures; market and economic research and analysis; and innovative marketing techniques. Students then choose two elective courses from several approved courses.

MS in Insurance Management Curriculum: The MS in insurance management program comprises 32 credits broken into 8 courses. Applicants must have already earned designation as a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (CPCU). Core courses include financial concepts; project management, international business, economics, and cultures; quantitative and qualitative decision making; Ecommerce; and the innovation process: developing new products and services. Specialization courses are not included due to the necessary completion of the CPCU designation. Insurance management students then choose two elective courses from approved choices.

MS in Project Management Curriculum: The MS in project management program comprises 40 credits divided into 10 courses. An optional concentration in program & project portfolio management is available. Core courses include project management; project communications and leadership; quantitative and qualitative decision-making; and principles and best practices in project, program, and portfolio management. Specialization courses for those not following the concentrations are chosen from an approved list. Project management students then choose two elective courses from approved choices.

  • Program & Project Portfolio Management Concentration Courses: Students in this concentration must take the core courses listed above for the project management MS plus the following concentration courses: project risk and cost management; agile project management; project value strategies; and portfolio and program management. Two electives are then chosen from a list of approved choices.

MS in Supply Chain Management Curriculum: The MS in supply chain management program includes three optional concentrations: analytics, logistics management, and risk management. The MS program requires completion of 40 credits over 10 courses.

Core courses for all concentrations include operations management: business process fundamentals; global supply chains; financial concepts; and quantitative and qualitative decision-making. A capstone project for supply chain management is also included for all pathways. Those not pursuing a concentration choose three specialization courses from those listed for the concentrations. As well, all students complete two electives from an approved list of choices.

  • Analytics Concentration Courses: Business analytics foundations; enterprise risk analytics; quality management.
  • Logistics Management Concentration Courses: Strategic logistics management; quality management; and international trade and logistics.
  • Risk Management Concentration Courses: Enterprise risk management; project risk and cost management; and quality management.

Graduate Certificate Curriculum: The graduate certificates offered include mostly specialization courses from the MS degrees. Courses are as follows:

Online Experience: Boston University delivers courses asynchronously through the Blackboard Learn online learning management system (LMS).
