The College of Business through Lamar University (LU) offers a 100 percent online MBA with 11 concentrations that can be completed in 12 months. The concentrations offered include general, accounting, business analytics, construction project management, criminal justice management, enterprise resource planning (ERP), financial management, healthcare administration, management, management information systems (MIS), and marketing.

In addition, Lamar University offers a dual MBA/MS in management information systems (MIS) that can be completed in just 18 months and a dual MSN-MBA degree that can be completed in 36 months.

Finally, Lamar offers four program certificates that can be completed in just six months: business analytics, construction project management, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and leadership.

LU seeks to provide convenient, flexible, and engaging online programs. To this end, courses are asynchronous and clearly outlined, while online learning includes discussion boards, streaming videos, online chat rooms, and simulations. In addition, in-state tuition is very affordable.

Courses for the online MBA focus on managerial economics and accounting, managerial decision-making, strategic management, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and marketing management. Students can then earn a concentration from those listed above by taking three courses specific to that focus area.

Courses for the dual MBA/MS in management information systems combine the core MBA concepts with MIS concepts in a seamless 18-month degree option. Students in this program graduate with both organizational knowledge and hands-on technical training in MIS. Included in the program is training in ERP software such as Advanced Excel, Tableau, Primavera P6, SAS Visual Analytics, Oracle, and Salesforce.

Courses for the dual MSN-MBA program combine the core business concepts included in the MBA degree with advanced healthcare policies and leadership training to prepare students for top-level management positions in the healthcare industry. Concepts covered include microeconomics, business principles for nurse leaders, role development, planning and organization of healthcare delivery, health information systems, and more. Included in the MSN portion of courses are two practicum experiences in administrative settings.

Graduates of the Lamar MBA program may go on to management and leadership positions in accounting, construction, criminal justice, marketing, finance, healthcare, education, digital business, manufacturing, IT, public health, human resources, global business, and consulting.

Lamar University is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and offers several online and campus-based master’s programs. What to Expect from the Lamar University Online MBA

Admission Requirements: Prospective online MBA, dual MBA/MS in management information systems, and program certificate students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 2.5 out of 4.0. The dual MSN-MBA program requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Applicants who do not hold a bachelor’s degree in a related field may need to take additional leveling courses.

Lamar University uses a point system as one of its admission standards. A score is calculated using a formula that includes the applicant’s GPA and GMAT test score. The GMAT/GRE is not required for applicants with a GPA above 2.5.

Application materials include an application and application fee, official transcripts, and GMAT test scores, as required. Those whose first language is not English must submit proof of English language proficiency.

Study Plan: The Lamar University 30-credit online MBA program can be completed in just 12 months. The 48-credit dual MBA/MS in management information systems can be completed in 18 months; the dual MSN-MBA program can be completed in 36 months; and the certificate programs can be completed in just six months. Start dates for these online programs land twice each in the fall and spring and once in the summer.

MBA Curriculum: The Lamar University MBA comprises 30 credits and includes leveling courses, core courses, and electives or concentration courses. Those without an undergraduate business degree may need to take the following leveling courses: financial accounting; foundations of finance; and business communication.

MBA core courses include managerial accounting; managerial economics; financial management; international business; strategic management; and marketing management. Students in all concentrations also choose either managerial decision-making or ERP overview.

Electives and concentration courses are as follows:

  • General: Students choose three electives from the following: employment law; personal leadership; concepts and applications for new ventures; team leadership; supply chain management; human resource management; business intelligence; and digital marketing.
  • Accounting: Students choose three electives from the following: partnership taxation; cases in corporate finance; financial statement analysis; and internal and external financial reporting.
  • Business Analytics: Students choose three electives from the following: data analytics in accounting; healthcare information systems; data mining and predictive analytics; business intelligence; and marketing research.
  • Construction Project Management: Students choose three electives from the following: advanced construction planning and scheduling; advanced construction project; construction cost management; conflict and negotiation management in construction; and sustainable practices in construction.
  • Criminal Justice Management: Students choose three electives from the following: criminal justice system and policy; special studies applied criminology law; theoretical foundations of crime control; and criminal justice leadership.
  • Enterprise Resource Planning: Students choose three electives from the following: ERP e-commerce; business intelligence; enterprise systems/customer relationship management (CRM); and data mining and predictive analytics. Students in this concentration may take a two-week ERP academy to become certified in business process integration using System Applications and Products in Data Processing (SAP) modules.
  • Financial Management: Students choose three electives from the following: international business; cases in corporate finance; investments; money and capital markets; and derivatives and risk management.
  • Healthcare Administration: Students choose three electives from the following: healthcare economics; healthcare entrepreneurship; healthcare information systems; healthcare strategies; and healthcare policy and finance. Students may also choose one of the following in place of one of the electives listed above: employment law; personal leadership; planning and organizing healthcare; team leadership; human resources management; and directing and controlling healthcare.
  • Management: Students choose three electives from the following: concepts and applications for new ventures; personal leadership; team leadership; employment laws on my colon and human resources management.
  • Management Information Systems: Students choose three electives from the following: database management systems; IT project management; information assurance and security; introduction to programming for business solutions; cyber security management; and healthcare information systems.
  • Marketing: Students choose three electives from the following: concepts and applications for new ventures; enterprise systems/CRM; international marketing; strategic cases and services marketing and management; consumer behavior; digital marketing; and marketing research.

Dual MBA/MS in Management Information Systems Curriculum: The dual MBA/MS in management information systems comprises 48 credits. Again, students without an undergraduate business degree may need to take the three leveling courses. Core courses include managerial accounting; managerial economics; financial management; managerial decision-making; marketing management; strategic management; ERP overview; ERP E-commerce; business intelligence; data mining and predictive analytics; either global enrichment or international business; and enterprise systems/CRM. Students then choose four electives from the following: supply chain management; internship; global enrichment; database management systems; IT project management; introduction to programming for business solutions; information assurance and security; cybersecurity management; healthcare information systems; and special topics in MIS.

Dual MSN-MBA Curriculum: The dual MSN-MBA comprises 61 credits. Students without an undergraduate business degree may need to take the three leveling courses. MSN courses include business principles for nurse leaders; microeconomic principles; administration practicum I-II; role development for nurse administrators; planning and organizing healthcare delivery; health information systems; directing and controlling healthcare delivery; evidence-based project I-II; theoretical foundations; nursing research; and advanced nursing issues & health policy. MBA courses include managerial accounting; managerial decision making; employment law; financial management; human resource management; business intelligence; marketing management; healthcare information systems; financial accounting; and foundations of finance.

Program Certificate in Business Analytics Curriculum: The certificate program in business analytics comprises 15 credits. Courses include data analytics in accounting; healthcare information systems; data mining and predictive analytics; business intelligence; and marketing research.

Program Certificate in Construction Project Management Curriculum: The certificate program in construction project management comprises 15 credits. Students choose five of the following courses: advanced construction planning and scheduling; construction cost management; advanced construction project; conflict and negotiation management in construction; and sustainable practices in construction.

Program Certificate in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Curriculum: The certificate program in ERP comprises 15 credits. Students choose four of the following courses: ERP overview; ERP E-Commerce; business intelligence; data mining and predictive analytics; and enterprise systems/CRM.

Program Certificate in Leadership Curriculum: The certificate program in leadership comprises 15 credits. Students choose five of the following courses: personal leadership; team leadership; strategic leadership; leadership and negotiation; human resources management; and employment law.

Online Experience: Lamar University seeks to provide maximum flexibility with 100 percent online asynchronous coursework while promoting interaction through streaming videos, online chat rooms, simulations, faculty office hours, and discussion boards. LULearn is the blackboard learning management system branded for Lamar University. Here courses are broken down into weekly increments and students can keep pace with the requirements.

Online student services may include an LU online student orientation, library and bookstore, LULearn support, online health tools, a career center, financial aid services, academic advising, Smarthinking online tutoring, proctoring services, and a disability resource center.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements as the Lamar University online MBA, dual MBA/MS in management information systems, and the program certificates are 100 percent online. Students in the enterprise resource planning MBA concentration have the opportunity to participate in a two-week SAP ERP Academy. This academy prepares graduates to earn certification in business process integration. Students in the dual MSN-MBA program complete two administration practicums.

Paying for the Lamar University Online MBA

The Lamar University online MBA and certificate program tuition numbers are listed in the tables below. The tuition listed is for non-residents. Texas residents will pay significantly less, about half as much as non-residents or slightly under half. Some fees such as a distance learning fee, student service fee, and technology service charge are included in the tuition listed. Other fees are not included. There are several financing options for online MBA students. These may include applying for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to obtain unsubsidized graduate student loans, inquiring with employers as to the possibility of tuition reimbursement programs, and investigating the possibility of securing private loans and community and organizational scholarships and grants.
