Texas State University Online Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Texas State University (TSU), originally founded in 1899 to provide teacher education in Texas, is a public, student-centered research institution dedicated to academic excellence, exploration, and innovation. The TSU McCoy College of Business is the home for the university’s master of business administration (MBA) degree program. The MBA program features four specializations: business analytics, human resources, marketing, and a general MBA program. The McCoy College of Business is dedicated to fostering a vibrant learning community in which members of its diverse student body develop the skills to not only establish successful careers in the business world but also live as responsible global citizens.

What to Expect from Texas State University Online MBA Programs

Admission Requirements: Applicants for all MBA programs must have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university as well as at least two years of professional business experience. A complete application consists of a completed online application, official transcripts from each institution where course credit was granted, a resume or CV that outlines education, professional and technical achievements, scholarships/grants, publications/presentations, and other accomplishments, an essay that articulates the applicant’s interest in the program as well as describes the applicant’s three most significant accomplishments, and the names of two professional references for persons best able to assess the student’s ability to succeed in graduate school. No GMAT or GRE score is required for admission.

The aforementioned requirements apply to all MBA specializations. As admissions requirements often change, prospective applicants are recommended to contact a student services representative to confirm current admission requirements.

State Restrictions: TSU welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, including international applicants and military personnel. One major challenge that may arise for some applicants, including international applicants, is English language proficiency.

Students need a sufficient level of English language proficiency to succeed in TSU’s MBA programs. Some applicants may be required to demonstrate their English language proficiency by satisfactory performance on an approved English proficiency exam. Applicants exempt from this requirement include those who have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from a country on TSU’s exempt countries list. Applicants should check the TSU MBA website to confirm what is considered an acceptable proficiency exam score, what proficiency exams are accepted, and what countries are on TSU’s exempt countries list.

To be eligible for admission, first-time college applicants from outside the United States must have graduated from a foreign secondary school with an academic profile equivalent to that found in a U.S. high school curriculum. Details about equivalency can be found on the TSU MBA program page.

TSU also has specific requirements for applicants with military backgrounds. These requirements vary depending on whether the applicant is applying as a freshman or as a transfer student. Students with military backgrounds may be able to obtain academic credit for physical education courses as well as up to 12 additional hours of military science credit. Applicants with military backgrounds should review the TSU MBA program website for more information.

Study Plan: Students can complete the general MBA program option in as little as 14 months, while all other programs can be completed in as little as 16 months. Applicants, such as working professionals interested in pursuing an MBA on a part-time basis, may be interested in TSU’s Flex MBA program. As this page does not focus specifically on the Flex program individuals interested in this option should explore the TSU Flex MBA program page for more information.

MBA Curriculum: MBA students completing the general program complete a 36-credit-hour curriculum. Students of the other tracks complete 39 credit hours. Students of all degree tracks complete a common set of core courses totaling 30 credit hours. Courses include organizational performance for competitive advantage; advanced statistical methods for business; financial management; organizational behavior and theory; operations management; marketing management; accounting analysis for managerial decision making; managerial economics; business professional development; and strategic management (capstone course). Students also complete specialization courses unique to each degree track. These are noted below.

  • MBA – General Curriculum: The general program features courses focused on strategic management; organizational behavior; marketing; and financial decision making.

  • MBA – Business Analytics Curriculum: Students complete concentration courses in data warehousing and mining; financial analytics; and marketing analytics.

  • MBA – Marketing Curriculum: Students complete concentration courses in marketing analytics; marketing research methods; and digital marketing.

  • MBA – Strategic Human Resources Curriculum: Students complete concentration courses in organizational staffing; human resource development; and international human resource management.

Online Experience: TSU’s online MBA degree programs are offered fully online. This is true for all four specializations. TSU recognizes the value of using online learning to enhance accessibility and thereby broaden the pool of applicants who ultimately enroll, study, and graduate.

On-Site Requirements: As noted above, the TSU MBA degree programs profiled here are offered fully online. There are no on-campus requirements.
