Youngstown State University Online Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Youngstown State University (YSU) is a public university located in Youngstown, Ohio. YSU was founded in 1908 when the local YMCA created a school of law within the Youngstown Association School. The school underwent several additional transformations before ultimately becoming part of the University System of Ohio and adopting the name Youngstown State University in 1967. In recent decades YSA has come to be seen as a major local catalyst for the economic, social and financial future of Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania and beyond.

The YSU Williamson College of Business Administration offers an online master of business administration (MBA) program with five specializations: healthcare management, human resources, marketing, organizational leadership, and a general MBA program. The curricula of all program tracks are designed to accommodate the needs of working professionals and their particular career goals and interests.

Youngstown State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The YSU Williamson College of Business Administration is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).

What to Expect from YSU Online MBA Programs

Admission Requirements: Admission to the MBA programs is contingent on a number of factors, including academic performance and work experience. Applicants to the YSU online MBA programs may qualify for either regular or provisional admission. Regardless of which form of admission applicants seek they must provide a chronological resume showing their full-time professional/managerial work experience as well as official transcripts from all colleges/universities they have attended.

Applicants may qualify for regular admission in a number of ways: 1) holding a bachelor’s degree in business, economics, or S.T.E.M. from an accredited university in which they maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, 2) have maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 in their bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of full-time professional work experience or have earned nine credits of graduate-level coursework from an accredited university in which they maintained a GPA of at least 3.0, 3) have a graduate or terminal degree in any field, 4) hold an active professional certification or 5) satisfy requirements for the Performace-based Admission Pathway.

To qualify for provisional admission applicants must have 1) have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a GPA between 2.7 and 2.99 and a GMAT (or GRE equivalent) score of at least 450, 2) have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.7 and at least five years of full-time professional work experience, or 3) have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.7 and at least nine credits of graduate-level coursework from an accredited university in which they maintained a GPA of at least 3.0.

YSU Online MBA Programs

State Restrictions: YSU welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, including international applicants and military personnel.

International students seeking admission to YSU’s online MBA programs must meet the requirements for university-level admission as well as any requirements specific to the MBA program. In general, international students must have the following to be considered eligible for admission: a bachelor’s degree from a college or university certified by a regional accrediting agency approved by the U.S. Department of Education and a cumulative U.S. grade-point average in undergraduate work of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. Such academic experience must be demonstrated by official transcripts, and transcripts from all previously attended educational institutions must be provided. In addition, students may be required to demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency as evidenced by an English proficiency exam administered by an accepted exam provider. YSU enrolls its students in accordance with the policies of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Applicants may also be required to submit a GMAT or GRE score. Waivers of this requirement may be granted in certain circumstances. A resume and demonstration of sufficient financial resources to support their studies is also required of international applicants. Upon enrollment in their program international students may be able to participate in the International Peer Mentoring Program provided by the YSU Center for International Studies and Programs. This program helps international students adjust to their new academic and social lives in the USA.

YSU’s Office of Veterans Affairs assists military students with the admissions process, financial aid, and supportive services during their studies. The 100 percent online MBA programs are ideally suited to military students who often need flexibility to accommodate required military training as well as deployment schedules. In addition, the MBA program in organizational leadership can be an especially good match to military students seeking to develop their leadership expertise further. Military applicants may apply online or via a paper application, and the application fee may be waived for both veterans and current military personnel. To cultivate a supportive university environment, YSU offers Warrior Awareness Training to its civilian faculty and staff, enhancing their ability to meet the needs of military and veteran students.

Study Plan: The YSU online MBA programs feature courses delivered in an accelerated format. This accelerated format and multiple program start dates in each calendar year are designed to meet the needs of a diverse student body, including working professionals. Students can complete these MBA programs in as little as 12 months. Students interested in completing their program of study part-time or over an extended time period should contact YSU directly to verify policy regarding degree study planning.

MBA Curriculum: The YSU MBA program is delivered both fully online and via a flex-campus option. Regardless of what specialization students choose, the curriculum is designed to prepare program graduates for higher levels of managerial and leadership responsibilities. Students complete 30 credit-hours consisting of 24 credits of MBA core courses as well as two specialization courses for an additional six credits. The eight core MBA courses are special topics or industrial economics; cost based decision making; corporate financial management; leadership; managing organizational talent; operations and supply chain management; marketing strategy; and business policy and strategy. Specialization courses for each track are listed below.

  • MBA – Healthcare Management Curriculum: Students complete specialization courses in planning and fiscal management in health and human services, and health care reform.

  • MBA – Human Resources Curriculum: Students complete specialization courses in developing and leading high-performance teams, and strategic human resource management.

  • MBA – Marketing Curriculum: Students complete specialization courses in consumers in a digital world, and digital marketing.

  • MBA – Organizational Leadership Curriculum: Students complete specialization courses in essentials of leadership coaching, and developing and leading high-performance teams.

  • MBA – General Program Curriculum: Students of the general MBA program complete any two of the following specialization courses: consumers in a digital world; digital marketing; planning and fiscal management in health and human services; health care reform; strategic human resource management; developing and leading high-performance teams; and essentials of leadership coaching.

Online Experience: YSU’s online MBA degree programs are offered fully online. There is no on-campus coursework or other participation requirements to complete this program. YSU recognizes the value of using online learning to enhance accessibility and broaden the pool of applicants who ultimately enroll, study, and graduate.

On-Site Requirements: As noted above, the MBA degree program is offered fully online. There are no on-campus requirements.
