Southeast Missouri State University Online Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) is a comprehensive university recognized for its excellence in the areas of education, research, engagement, and creativity. SEMO features a student body of approximately 10,000 students and markets itself as “a place for people who are driven to do.”

SEMO’s academic programs and campus life emphasize student success, excellence, and community. SEMO is also located in an area rich with history. Based in Cape Girardeau near the banks of the Mississippi River, SEMO reflects its past history of pioneers and steamboat travel along the Mississippi while simultaneously serving as a modern home for SEMO’s diverse academic programs.

The SEMO Harrison College of Business and Computing offers an online master of business administration (MBA) degree program with four specializations: accounting, general management, health administration, and international business. SEMO’s MBA program curricula incorporate a forward-thinking approach and welcome a large and diverse student body to participate in its academic programs.

SEMO is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission’s Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. SEMO’s MBA program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).

What to Expect from SEMO Online MBA Programs

Admission Requirements: To be eligible for admission, applicants must have been awarded an undergraduate degree from an AACSB-accredited business program or have satisfactorily completed an equivalent curriculum from an accredited institution. Those applicants who lack sufficient foundational knowledge in business and economics but meet all other admission requirements may be offered provisional admission. Upon satisfactory completion of prerequisite coursework students in provisional admission status may have their status adjusted to regular admission status.

Applicants must meet not just SEMO graduate studies admission criteria but also departmental criteria specific to the MBA program. In particular, applicants will be eligible for admission if they meet one of the following criteria: 1) hold a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0; 2) hold a graduate degree; 3) hold a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 and qualify for either regular or probationary admission, or 4) hold a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA under 2.5 and provide additional documentation demonstrating the applicant has sufficient qualifications to succeed in the program. Applicants qualifying under the fourth criterion may do so based upon a variety of documentation, including professional experience as detailed in their resume, an existing healthcare provider license, an existing professional certification, or other documentation assessed to be compelling by the director of the graduate business studies program. Details regarding what exact licenses and certifications may be used can be found online.

In addition, applicants qualify for admission by holding the required degree issued by a regionally accredited American institution of higher education or by holding an education obtained overseas that is effectively a foreign equivalent.

State Restrictions: SEMO welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds such as international applicants and military personnel.

International applicants must complete an application process more complex than their domestic applicant counterparts. To be eligible for admission, international applicants must submit an online application, official transcripts, proof of financial resources, a non-refundable application fee, a copy of a current passport, and demonstrate proof of English language proficiency. Applicants lacking English language proficiency may be interested to enroll in SEMO’s intensive English language program. Details on what constitutes acceptable documents in fulfillment of these requirements can be found on the SEMO website. Important guidance for admitted students prior to their enrollment in studies can also be found on the university’s website. International applicants and students are recommended to contact the SEMO Office of International Education and Services for assistance with a variety of needs.

Military and related students applying to the SEMO online MBA programs must apply as transfer students. Such applicants must submit an online application and official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. Active duty, reserve and veteran Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy officers can request their transcripts through the Joint Services Transcript system. Air Force officers can meanwhile request their transcripts through the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF).

The SEMO Office of Military and Veterans Services highly recommends that military applicants also submit their military transcripts for evaluation. Military applicants can often receive academic course credit for military technical training and thereby reduce the time necessary to complete their degrees. Additional details on how military and related individuals can apply to the SEMO online MBA programs can be found on the SEMO website.

Study Plan: Students can complete these MBA degrees in as little as 24 months. Students interested in completing their program of study part-time or over an extended time period should contact a student services representative to verify the current SEMO policy regarding degree study planning.

Students who lack an undergraduate degree in business may need to develop or demonstrate proficiency in foundational topics before taking courses for which there are prerequisites. Subjects for which foundational knowledge is essential include accounting, microeconomics, financial management, management information systems, business analytics, and statistics.

SEMO students can get course credit for past professional experience via completion of something called a prior learning assessment. Such an assessment weighs a variety of student experiences, including work experience, military service, certifications, credentials, and more.

MBA Curriculum: MBA students of all tracks complete a 33-credit-hour curriculum consisting of 21 credit hours of core courses, 12 credit hours of elective courses, and either a master’s final comprehensive examination course or a master’s oral examination course for which no academic credit is awarded.

Core courses cover the following topics: organizational behavior in practice; quantitative and qualitative research methods; integrated decision information systems; strategic decision making; strategic marketing; strategic cost analysis and financial applications; and the financial environment

Elective courses vary by degree specialization. A listing of elective courses specific to each specialization appears below.

  • MBA – General Management Curriculum: Students of the general management curriculum may complete any 500-600 level course from a number of different disciplines within SEMO. Applicants should consult the SEMO website for more details on what courses may qualify as electives within this degree track.
  • MBA – Health Administration Curriculum: Students complete their 12 credit hour requirement by taking courses offered in the following topics: healthcare economics; healthcare performance improvement; healthcare quality and value; healthcare informatics; healthcare database systems; fundamentals of medical practice management; topics in healthcare administration; healthcare budgeting and reimbursement; healthcare strategy and marketing; and health administration policy. Students may also earn credit through an applied research project; a graduate internship in healthcare; and/or an independent study in healthcare. Students should take note that not all courses earn them the same number of credit hours.
  • MBA – Accounting Curriculum: Students complete one course from among these topics: advanced financial accounting; advanced auditing & assurance services; or taxation of business entities. Students also complete three courses from the following course topics: advanced financial accounting; advanced auditing & assurance services; international perspectives accounting; taxation of business entities; government and not-for-profit accounting; fraud examination and forensic accounting; and forensic accounting analytics. Students may also earn three credit hours through an applied research project and/or an accounting course not mentioned above.
  • MBA – International Business Curriculum: Students complete two courses from the following topics: international perspectives on accounting; international economics; international finance; and/or an applied research project. Students then complete two more courses from among these topics: international business strategies; international business law; international healthcare administration; international management; international marketing; and/or an applied research project.

Online Experience: All SEMO online MBA degree programs are offered fully online. There are no on-campus coursework or other participation requirements to complete this program. SEMO’s online delivery model enables it to offer its MBA programs to a larger pool of students, thereby increasing the number of students who enroll, study, and ultimately graduate.

On-Site Requirements: As noted above, the MBA degree program is offered fully online. There are no on-campus requirements. However, students can obtain academic credit through study abroad experiences that do not necessarily require on-site experience. For example, students of the international business and accounting MBA degree tracks may earn academic credit through study abroad experiences. Such offerings are subject to change. Students interested in studying abroad should contact their advisor or the SEMO Office of International Education and Services to learn more.

Paying for the SEMO Online MBA Degree Programs

The tuition figures for SEMO’s online MBA degree programs are listed in the tables below. Prospective students should carefully review the tuition information and contact SEMO for additional support with applications and questions.

The SEMO website offers extensive information explicitly dedicated to student financial resources and needs. Particular financial topics include information on financial aid availability and eligibility, financial aid application forms, essential norms and policies such as satisfactory academic progress policy and financial aid code of conduct, and a true cost calculator.

Many students will ultimately use a variety of resources to finance their education. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a widely used form that serves as the primary application for determining eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid. The FAFSA is issued annually, and universities generally provide robust support in helping students understand and complete the FAFSA. Financial aid eligibility determinations generated by the FAFSA and other applications are often based on several factors, including academic achievement, talent, financial need, and family background.

Students from certain backgrounds may be eligible for additional financial assistance. Examples of such backgrounds include military personnel and those with significant obstacles in their family and personal backgrounds. All prospective graduate students are advised to thoroughly research the SEMO website to guide them as they formulate their strategy for financing their education.
