Troy University Online Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Troy University was founded in the 19th century in the year 1887. Like many universities of the South, Troy University began as a school to train teachers. It was originally called the Troy State Normal School. In 1893, the school was renamed Troy State Normal College, and in 1929 it was once more renamed as Troy State Teacher’s College.

The era immediately after World War II was a period of remarkable growth for many American universities. This was true for Troy State. Rapid growth in enrollment drove an expansion of degree programs into subjects beyond education. Beginning in the 1950s Troy State expanded its educational offering onto a variety of US military bases.

Troy Service Centers, a division of Troy University, later emerged and began operating teaching sites at many sites outside Alabama in neighboring states. Today, Troy Service Centers operates approximately 20 sites in several U.S. states as well as abroad in places like Japan and South Korea.

The Troy University Sorrell College of Business online MBA program offers a master of business administration (MBA) degree with twelve specializations: artificial intelligence, business exchange, cybersecurity management, health services management, human resource management, international relations, leadership, management, public administration, sport management, strategic communication, and a general MBA program.

The Troy University MBA program is well designed to accommodate both working professionals as well as active-duty military personnel. Troy University’s longstanding partnership with the US military makes it an especially appealing choice for many military students.

Troy University, located in Troy, Alabama is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The Troy University MBA program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).

What to Expect

Admission Requirements: To be offered admission, applicants must submit a complete online application for admission, demonstrate they have a bachelor’s degree via final official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, and also submit letters of recommendation. The MBA program does not require test scores such as the GMAT or GRE.

MBA program applicants may be granted one of two types of admission, namely unconditional and conditional. Applicants are granted unconditional admission if they hold a master’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited university. No letter of recommendation is required for those who hold a master’s or higher degree from an accredited institution. Unconditional admission is also granted to those who hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0-point scale or at least a GPA of 3.0 in their last 30 semester hours and provide an official letter of recommendation.

Conditional admission may be offered in some cases when applicants cannot meet all unconditional admission requirements. Students who have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university but do not have the required GPA to be admitted unconditionally may be granted conditional admission for a maximum of nine semester hours. Conditionally admitted students will have this status removed if, upon completing nine semester hours, they have a GPA of at least 3.0 on all graduate work they have attempted. Conditionally admitted students who do not meet the performance requirement are dropped from the graduate program for a calendar year and are thereafter allowed to petition the Dean of the Graduate School to re-enter.

Troy University also welcomes transfer students, returning students and others. Prospective applicants should thoroughly review the Troy University website to learn what admissions criteria apply to their particular circumstances.

State Restrictions: Troy University welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds, such as international applicants and military personnel.

International applicants must submit the following to be considered for admission: a completed international application, official copies of their bachelor’s degree transcripts or mark sheets both in their native language and in English if the original document is not written in English, a financial support statement demonstrating ability to pay for educational expenses, a copy of their passport identification page in which machine-readable code visible, and demonstration of English language proficiency if warranted. Students required to demonstrate English language proficiency must do so using a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) approved English language proficiency exam provider. The Troy University website provides a listing of origin countries whose students are exempt from demonstrating English language ability.

As noted in the introduction, Troy University has a longstanding history of collaboration with the US military. This deep partnership is reflected in the university’s status as a Military Friendly® and Military Spouse Friendly® School, its TROY for Troops Centers, and the various financial resources it provides to support active-duty service members, spouses, and dependents in pursuing higher education. Troy University has received numerous accolades for its commitment to military students as noted on the university’s website.

Military students must meet the Troy University general graduate and MBA program specific admission requirements expected of other domestic applicants. Military students whose native language is not English will need to meet English language proficiency requirements just as international applicants must do. Troy University’s deep partnership in the US military is also reflected in the variety of financial resources available to military students. An overview of such resources can be found on the Troy University website. Given the complexity of military backgrounds and needs, as well as the fact that programs and resources are subject to change it is recommended that applicants with military backgrounds contact the Admissions Office and/or the Troy University Military and Veterans Affairs office both during their application process and once they begin studies.

Study Plan: Students can complete the Troy University MBA program in as little as 12 months. Students interested in completing their program of study part-time or over an extended time period should contact a student services representative to verify the current Troy University policy regarding degree study planning.

Students can transfer academic credits and thereby shorten the time commitment necessary to obtain their degree. Military students in particular may also be granted academic transfer credit for particular Professional Military Education (PME) courses completed at select military service schools for which the American Council on Education recommends credit. Other forms of experience accrued while serving in the US military may also be eligible for award of academic transfer credit.

The tuition figures for the online MBA degree programs are listed in the tables below. Prospective students should carefully review the tuition information and contact Troy University for additional support with applications and any questions they may have.

The Troy University Office of Financial Aid and the university’s website offer extensive resources focused on the topic of student financial resources. Online information covers a variety of topics, including the process of applying for financial aid, types of aid available, the cost of attendance, forms and policies related to financial aid, budgeting tools, and more.

Students frequently use a combination of financial resources to finance their education. To determine eligibility for federal, state and institutional aid, students may complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is issued annually, and universities generally provide robust support in helping students understand and complete the FAFSA. Financial aid eligibility determinations generated by the FAFSA and other applications are often generated based on a number of factors such as academic achievement, talent, financial need, and family background.

Students from certain backgrounds may be eligible for additional financial assistance. Examples of such backgrounds include military personnel, and those with significant obstacles in their family and personal backgrounds. As previously noted, Troy University has a deep relationship with the US military as reflected in its various financial resources available to military and veteran students. Examples of such resources include the military and family scholarship and the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may also be eligible for state aid through the Alabama National Guard Education Assistance Program (ANGEAP).

All prospective graduate students are advised to thoroughly research the Troy University website both to guide them as they formulate their strategy for financing their education and to ease the process of managing the financing of their education upon enrollment.
