Babson College Online MBA | #1 in Entrepreneurship

Babson College offers a 100 percent online MBA with a general track or a choice of seven concentrations, allowing students to focus on areas that meet their business goals. The F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business allows students to choose up to two concentrations which would then be reflected on their transcript. The concentrations include business analytics, business analytics and machine learning, entrepreneurship, finance, global management, quantitative finance, and marketing.

Students in the online MBA participate in live, online class sessions with both online and in-person students, taught by faculty who are adept at including online students in live classroom discussions. In addition, MBA students may choose to mix and match classes, attending some in-person courses and some online courses.

The Babson online MBA can be completed in about 18 months to three years or more depending on the individual situation of the student. There are five start dates offered per year.

What to Expect from the Babson College Online MBA

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the Babson online MBA must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. No GMAT is currently required for the program.

Participants in the Babson online MBA typically have five to ten years of work experience; however, no specific work experience is required. Application materials include an application fee, resume, one letter of professional recommendation, written responses to short-answer questions, official transcripts, an optional essay for the admissions committee, and a video interview.

Students whose native language is not English must submit English language proficiency test scores. Note that residents of California are not eligible for the Babson online MBA.

Study Plan: There are five start dates per year for the Babson online MBA and the program may be completed in about 18 months to three years or more depending on the individual situation. Students take one-third of their courses as core courses and the other two-thirds are electives that can be focused into up to two concentrations.

Babson College Online MBA Concentrations

Curriculum: The online MBA consists of 45 credits, one-third of which constitutes the MBA core. This core is based on key functional areas and is designed to be experiential and interdisciplinary.

Courses include three areas: leading through opportunity and design, leading through innovation and growth; and the Babson consulting experience. Courses include entrepreneurship; finance; financial reporting; managing people and organizations; business analytics; marketing; operations and information management; and strategy.

Electives consist of a variety of courses some of which may include entrepreneurship and the gig economy; food entrepreneurship; cognitive technology; business strategy and game theory; business intelligence, analytics, and visualization; leading business turnaround; negotiation; new venture creation; leaving for social values; and real estate investment fundamentals.

As mentioned in the introduction, concentrations include business analytics, business analytics and machine learning, entrepreneurship, global management, finance, quantitative finance, and marketing. Each concentration includes course electives from which students can earn up to two concentrations. Students taking the general MBA track can take electives from any of the concentrations.

The business analytics concentration requires students to take at least one of the following courses: introduction to machine learning methods for business; business intelligence, analytics, and visualization; and data exploration and analytics. Students must also choose at least one course from the following: programming for business analytics; intro to database management; and competing on analytics using technology. Students then choose one of the following: economic and financial forecasting or marketing analytics. Finally, students finish the required elective credit requirements from a list of choices.

The business analytics and machine learning STEM concentration requires students to choose at least three of the following: machine learning methods for business; programming for business analytics; modern econometrics for business; economic and financial forecasting; and optimization. Students can then choose to add a fourth course from that list or choose one of the following: marketing analytics; financial and macroeconomic data analysis; introduction into database management; healthcare: markets, analytics, and strategy; add dial experimentation; strategy and tactics of pricing; and introduction to data science.

The entrepreneurship concentration requires students to choose at least one of the following: new venture creation; entrepreneurial finance; and managing a growing business. Students may fulfill the other nine credits with the other two courses on that list or they take courses from lists related to entrepreneurship and advanced competency development.

The global management concentration requires students to take the course global strategic management and at least three credits from the following: global marketing strategy; international finance; trade and globalization; international macro: what every MBA student should know; doing business globally: highways and landmines; managing a diverse workplace; global and international business contexts; and strategy execution.

In addition, global management students may choose to apply for experiential learning options including electives abroad, a semester abroad, independent research with a focus on global management, management consulting field experience (MCFE), managing the consulting experience, and international consulting experience.

The finance concentration requires completion of 12 credits of courses which may include capital markets; risk management; equities; fixed-income; corporate finance: raising capital; financing and valuing sustainability; corporate finance: evaluating opportunities; managing portfolios; finance for new ventures; financial trading strategy; real estate investment; real estate finance; the Babson College Fund; investment banking and financial modeling; real estate development; and real estate financial modeling. Other courses that will not count toward the concentration but may provide additional skills or perspectives include financial reporting and statement analysis; economic and financial forecasting; measuring and managing strategic results; and financial modeling.

The quantitative finance concentration requires completion of the course derivatives: theory and practice and at least two of the following: fixed-income; corporate finance: evaluating opportunities; managing portfolios; and financial trading strategies. Students can choose another elective from the prior list, or choose one elective from the following list: risk management; investment banking and financial modeling; economic and financial forecasting; financial macroeconomic data analysis; and business intelligence, analytics, and visualization.

The marketing concentration offers a long list of electives, some of which may include marketing analytics; retailing strategy; consumer behavior; sales in action (formally building and leading effective salesforce); brand management; strategy and tactics of pricing; science, technology, and the enterprise; disruptive change and the enterprise transfer; pricing in the information industries; and communication and collaboration in virtual teams.

Online Experience: In-person faculty run live, in-person sessions which also include the online MBA students who are integrated into the classroom experience through collaboration, asking and answering questions, and commenting on the concepts shared. Classes may include break-out groups and other collaborative experiences. In this way, students participate real-time as the course is taught on campus. Online students need a laptop or desktop, webcam, and microphone to participate in live classes.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the Babson College 100 percent online MBA program. There may be opportunities for travel abroad, research, and consulting experiences.

Paying for the Babson College Online MBA

Babson College charges $1,990 per credit for online tuition for a total cost of at least $89,550 for the MBA program, not including additional fees and any travel expenses for study abroad should a student choose to do so. Tuition rates may change, and therefore online students should contact the admissions department of the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business program for exact costs.

Students can help pay for their online MBA with graduate student loans, federal financial aid, scholarships, and grants.
