UAB Collat School of Business Online MBA Programs - University of Alabama Birmingham

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Collat School of Business offers an online MBA with a general track or one of four concentrations: finance, health services, management information systems, and marketing. The online degree carries the same status as the on-campus MBA and is taught by the same faculty. As a part-time online MBA program, it offers the flexibility busy working professionals need to manage work, school, and family obligations.

The Collat School of Business seeks to develop students skilled in innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurship. The program is designed to give students the core fundamentals needed to succeed as business leaders, as well as a real-world focus on modern business and business technologies. Students learn through real-world experiential opportunities within the Birmingham community, whether on campus or online. The program is based on a cohort experience to foster relationships, new ways of approaching problems, and thinking outside the box.

Ninety percent of the Collat School of Business faculty hold professional or academic PhDs and are industry leaders engaged in business in the Birmingham community. Faculty are dedicated to the success of students and maintaining the highest standards of ethical business practices. Prospective students are encouraged to apply whether or not they have a background degree in business. Business students come from the local community, across the U.S., and around the globe. Applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree and have completed pre-calculus.

What to Expect from the UAB Collat School of Business Online MBA Program

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the UAB online MBA program must hold at least a bachelor’s degree and have completed a pre-calculus class within the previous five years with a grade of C or better. Prospective students must submit an application with evaluation forms and letters of reference, a current resume detailing work experience, official transcripts, and GMAT test scores. No work experience is required; however, preference is given to applicants with two or more years of professional experience. A GMAT waiver is available for qualified applicants who have 3-5 years continuous professional work experience and for those who have earned a master’s degree (or another terminal degree). International students must submit TOEFL or IELTS test scores unless they earned a bachelor’s degree at a U.S.-based institution, as well as the ECE or WES report (i.e., foreign credential evaluations).

Study Plan: The online MBA consists of 36 credits without a concentration and 39 credits with a concentration. Students can complete the program in as few as six semesters (two years). Most students take two courses per semester, although the program can be completed full-time in about one year. Start dates are offered in the fall, spring, and summer. As mentioned above, there are four concentrations in addition to the general track MBA: finance, health services, management information systems, and marketing.

Curriculum: Students take 12 credits in the area of perspectives on business and business tools, which include courses in accounting and finance for managers, economics for managers, management and organizations, and quantitative analysis for business managers. Another 15 core credits are in areas such as strategic cost analysis and decision making, information technology and business strategy, topics in corporate finance, operations and supply management, and marketing strategies. A capstone course in strategic management earns three credits. Then, to round things off, students in the general track take two electives for a total of six credits, and students choosing a concentration take three courses for a total of nine elective credits. In the part-time program, electives are taken during the second year.

Online Experience: The Collat School of Business MBA is 100 percent online and asynchronous, which means there are no set course times for logging in. Students can watch courses 24 hours a day and complete assignments on their own timetable. This contributes to the flexibility of being able to work full-time and still earn an MBA. UAB uses the platform Canvas to deliver online content. This includes Citrix GoToMeeting/GoToTraining as an online collaboration platform, and the Respondus Lockdown Browser for testing. Students must have access to a computer, speakers, and a high-speed internet connection, as well as Flash, Java, and Adobe Reader.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the online MBA through Collat School of Business as the program is 100 percent online. UAB is in the process of building the new Collat School of Business building that is designed to foster innovation and collaboration among students, faculty, and business leaders. Spaces include a trading floor, classrooms with leading edge technology, showrooms for entrepreneurial presentations, and more. Online students are welcome to visit the completed building and campus anytime.
