University of Texas Permian Basin Online Master of Business Administration (MBA)

The University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) originated from an act of the Texas State legislature in the year 1969 when it decided to create an upper-level university in Odessa, Texas in the year 1969. This original university only accepted junior, senior and graduate students and first opened for classes in September, 1973. Eighteen years later, in 1991, the Texas Legislature changed UTPB by turning it into a four-year institution. The first freshman class started classes in the autumn of 1991.

UTPB is a regional, comprehensive educational institution committed to serving a diverse student body whose origins derive from throughout the local region, the entire state of Texas, and elsewhere. UTPB’s emphases in student-centered teaching, research, and public service manifest in its cultivation of local partnerships, embrace of technology, and support for the public good of West Texas.

The UTPB online MBA program offers a master of business administration (MBA) degree with seven specializations: accounting, analytics, finance, international business, marketing, a general program, and a general MBA with an energy business certificate. The diversity of UTPB’s MBA program offerings makes the university a great choice for students aspiring to contribute their skills to various parts of the business world.

UTPB, located in Odessa, Texas, is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The UTPB MBA program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).

What to Expect from UTPB Online MBA Programs

Admission Requirements: The UTPB MBA program offers admission to a diverse applicant pool. Regardless of their background applicants applying to a UTPB graduate program must generally fulfill the following requirements: 1) hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in the United States (or proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution) in which they maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4 point scale within the last 60 hours of coursework leading to their degree, 2) demonstrate adequate preparation for their proposed graduate program and 3) receive a favorable recommendation from the graduate admission committee corresponding to the program department in which they plan to study.

In some cas,es applicants may also be required to submit competitive scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

Applicants may be offered regular admission, conditional admission, or conditional admission with Dean approval. Applicants seeking regular admission must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in which they maintained a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.0 scale. Conditional admission may be granted to applicants who have the necessary bachelor’s degree education in which their cumulative undergraduate GPA was between 2.5 and 2.99 on a 4.0 scale.

Applicants must also submit two letters of recommendation or professional email references. Students granted conditional admission are permitted to take up to 12 credit hours of graduate work, may only enroll in one course at a time, and are not eligible to take elective courses. Students with a GPA between 2.25 and 2.49 may still be offered conditional admission, but will receive such admission only with the dean’s approval. Students with this academic performance history must have a GMAT score of at least 500, and submit two letters of recommendation or professional email references. In addition, applicants may also be asked to write an essay as part of their application. Students granted conditional admission will be changed to regular status after completing a minimum of 12 semester-credit-hours of MBA course coursework with a grade of B or better in each course taken.

State Restrictions: UTPB welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds such as international applicants, military personnel, and transfer students. Regardless of applicants’ origins and backgrounds, it is highly recommended that applicants closely collaborate with UTPB during the application process.

International students apply to the MBA program by fulfilling the typical graduate school admission requirements as well as submitting additional documentation. Additional documentation may include some combination of the following: demonstration of English language proficiency, foreign academic credential evaluation, proof of financial support, and/or GRE/GMAT scores.

International students whose native language is not English must submit proof of language proficiency by completing the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test (DET). An exception is made for students who have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at an institution of higher education in the United States and for those who completed their degree outside the USA in a country approved by the State Board for Educator Certification.

In addition, students originating from countries where English is the only official language and the primary conversational language of the country are also exempt from the language proficiency requirement. Applicants who completed their degrees outside the USA must have their transcripts evaluated by a foreign credential evaluation service. Information on which evaluation agencies’ work will be accepted can be found online. Students seeking an I-20 for the purpose of securing an F-1 visa must also submit a copy of their passport bio and information pages as well as these same pages for any dependents, such as a spouse or child.

International students seeking to transfer from another U.S. college, university, or other school must have their current school send a photocopy of their I-20 form, DS-2019 form, I-94 form, US Visa page, and/or passport information page, as well as an international student transfer verification form. Details on the requirements for proof of financial support, possible need for GRE/GMAT scores, and other information related to international student admissions can be found on the UTPB website.

Military students may apply to the MBA program by completing an online admission application at ApplyTexas.org. Students with military backgrounds, as well as related personnel, may request a waiver of the application fee. Such applicants must also submit a DD-14, a copy of their military ID or a letter confirming their veteran status. Prospective applicants with a military background should consult the UTPB website for more information on how to apply.

UTPB also welcomes applications from transfer students to both its undergraduate and graduate programs. To qualify as a transfer student for the MBA program applicants must complete the online application at ApplyTexas.org, submit official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities (this includes any dual-credit coursework from high school), have maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4 point scale in previous graduate-level coursework, and be in good academic standing at institutions they previously attended. International graduate students seeking to transfer from another U.S. college, university, or other school must have their college, university, or other school send UTPB a photocopy of relevant documentation, such as their I-20 form, DS-2019 form, I-94 form, US Visa page, and/or passport information page as well as the international student transfer verification form.

Study Plan: Students can complete these MBA degrees in as little as 12 months. Students have the flexibility to set their own study pace. Students interested in completing their program of study part-time or over an extended time period should contact a student services representative to verify current UTPB policy regarding degree study planning.

Upon receiving regular or conditional admission students’ backgrounds will be assessed to determine statistics knowledge. Students determined to be deficient in this discipline will be required to complete a statistical literacy course. This course must be taken in the first semester.
