Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU) offers a 100 percent online master of business administration (MBA) program through the Management, Business, and Economics Department with a general track or one of these concentrations: finance or health care administration. The degree can be completed in as little as 12 months with full-time study. There are no on-site requirements and no work experience is required.

VWU seeks to prepare MBA graduates as leaders who are focused on economic value, sustainable business, and socially and environmentally ethical business practices. The online MBA is dedicated to the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) which was developed by the United Nations. VWU is the first liberal arts institution in the United States to sign the UN Global Compact which promotes ethical business practices focused on human rights, fair labor practices, environmental responsibility, and anti-corruption.

The VWU online MBA continues this focus on global business through research, partnerships, dialogue, and debate concerning global social responsibility and sustainable business practices. Subjects covered in coursework may include supply chain management including inventory management, “green” practices, and transportation issues, as well as other areas such as marketing, managerial economics, organizational behavior, leadership, strategic planning, and information systems.

Courses last 7.5 weeks each and start dates land twice each in the fall, spring, and summer. Full-time students can complete the degree in as little as 12 months with part-time options available. No GMAT or work experience is required. Graduates of the general MBA and concentrations may go on to careers in business operations, health services management, public relations, marketing, entrepreneurship, and finance.

What to Expect from the Virginia Wesleyan University Online MBA

Admission Requirements: Prospective students must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA. Those who have not earned a bachelor’s degree in business will likely need to complete three foundational courses. No GMAT or work experience is required.
Applicants must submit an online application and official transcripts. Prerequisites include microeconomics, macroeconomics, and either statistics or accounting. Proof of English language proficiency and foreign transcript verification is required if applicable.

Study Plan: The Virginia Wesleyan University online MBA includes courses that last 7.5 weeks each. Start dates land twice each in the fall, spring, and summer. The program can be completed in 12 months full-time in an accelerated MBA path. The 12-month pathway requires approximately 18 to 24 hours of work per week on coursework. Part-time options are also available.
No campus visits are required; however, students have opportunities to complete internships and study abroad.

Curriculum: The VWU online MBA requires the completion of 30 credits. Prerequisites for those without a business bachelor’s degree include microeconomics and macroeconomics and either statistics or accounting.

Core courses for all tracks include accounting information and management systems; marketing management: analysis, planning, and control; managerial economic analysis; managerial finance; and organizational behavior and leadership.

  • General Track Courses: Operations management and decision-making; ethical management in a global environment; leading diverse organizations; competitive supply chain systems; advanced strategy and policy integration

  • Health Care Administration Track Courses: Operations management and decision-making; applied ethics and legal issues in healthcare; healthcare finance; and competitive supply chain systems

Online Experience: The VWU online MBA courses are delivered through the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS). Courses are designed to be participative and students communicate with faculty and peers through Blackboard. Course delivery may include recorded lectures, discussion boards, assignments and examinations, case studies, and real-world projects and experiences. Opportunities for internships and study abroad may be available.

Online MBA students have access to academic support services through the Learning Center such as Smarthinking online writing and subject tutoring. Other student support services through VWU include an online bookstore and library, academic advising, faculty office hours, career counseling, and IT services.

On-Site Requirements: The Virginia Wesleyan University online MBA program is 100 percent online with no campus visits. Students may have opportunities for internships and study abroad.
