Boise State University’s College of Business and Economics offers a fully online MBA (OMBA) with a general track or one of four concentrations that can be completed in as little as 12 months. The concentrations offered include construction management, healthcare leadership, management, and marketing management.

In addition to fully online coursework, Boise State online courses include all course materials, so there is no need to buy textbooks. The program is designed for professionals with at least two years of managerial work experience in any field. The GMAT/GRE is required; however, a waiver is available. No leveling courses are required for those without a business background.

Core courses for all tracks cover concepts in marketing strategy, managerial accounting, corporate finance, operations and supply chain management, and global economics. Another key skill covered is navigating interpersonal relationships between managers and employees and peer relationships. This course covers concepts such as group dynamics, human resource planning, negotiation, collaboration, coaching, employee termination, recruitment, and other management topics.

The concentration in construction management prepares graduates to serve in management positions in engineering, construction, and architecture. Learned skills include project planning, project management, project execution, team management, effective communication, conflict management, ethics, risk management, project cost accounting, sales and marketing, and personnel administration.

The concentration in healthcare leadership prepares health care professionals to manage and make effective decisions in the business side of healthcare. Issues covered include the cost and quality of healthcare, healthcare access, change management, program planning, organizational systems, ethics related to healthcare, data management, healthcare compliance, population-based health, budgeting, risk-sharing, and operational decision-making. Graduates may work in leadership and management positions in healthcare organizations such as hospitals, clinics, correctional facilities, and long-term healthcare.

The management concentration prepares graduates with a heavy emphasis on the necessary communication and managerial skills to effectively lead groups and organizations. Topics covered include workforce motivation, project management, written and oral communication, persuasive presentations, informal communication, business technology, business analytics, and team formation. Project management tools covered include the critical path method (CPM), the program evaluation review technique (PERT), project tracking, critical chain analysis, and resource utilization. The concentration courses include an applied project.

Students in the marketing management concentration become effective team leaders, utilizing their skills to work across teams such as strategy, marketing, research, data analysis, communications, and production. Specialization courses cover marketing leadership, digital marketing management, and product management. Graduates may enter career paths such as director of marketing, chief marketing officer, vice president of marketing, or director of corporate communications.

What to Expect from the Boise State Online MBA

Admission Requirements: Prospective online MBA students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0. If the overall GPA from the last 60 credits of coursework meets this requirement, that is acceptable. Provisional admission may be considered for those with a 2.75 to 2.99 GPA. Overall, applicants with a GPA lower than 2.75 will be considered on a case-by-case basis and must show significant work experience. For all applicants, at least two years of professional managerial work experience is required.

The GMAT/GRE is required with an optional waiver for the following circumstances:

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA and three years of management experience
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA and five years of management experience
  • Master’s or doctoral degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA

Application materials include a current resume highlighting professional work experience, a personal statement, an optional 500-word essay, two recommendations, an application fee, and official transcripts. Those whose first language is not English must submit proof of English language proficiency.

Study Plan: The Boise State University 49-credit OMBA program can be completed in as little as 12 months. Courses last seven weeks each, and the program begins twice each in the fall, spring, and summer. A capstone project is included in the core curriculum.

MBA Curriculum: The OMBA comprises 49 credits and includes core courses plus electives or concentration courses. There are no leveling courses or prerequisites for this program.

Online MBA core courses include business foundation; marketing strategy; design thinking and strategic management; people and organization; corporate finance; managerial accounting; global economics: policy and trade; legal issues in business; operations and supply chain management; and integrated capstone.

Students in the general MBA track take three electives from those listed for the concentrations:

  • Construction Management: architecture, engineering, and construction project management; leadership in architecture, engineering, and construction; architecture, engineering, and construction company management
  • Healthcare Leadership: healthcare systems and delivery; leadership for health professionals; healthcare operations and financial management
  • Management: managerial communication; managing successful projects; information technology and business alignment
  • Marketing Management: marketing leadership; digital marketing management; strategic product management

Online Experience: Boise State University transitioned to Canvas as its online learning management system (LMS) in the fall of 2021. All courses and textbooks are 100 percent online, eliminating the need to purchase separate physical textbooks. Courses last seven weeks each and are specifically designed for working professionals who have busy schedules.

Online student services may include online tutoring, academic advising, career planning, faculty support, academic accommodations for students with disabilities, library services, online orientation, the Writing Center, technical support, and veteran services.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements as the Boise State University online MBA is 100 percent online.

Paying for the Boise State University Online MBA

Boise State University online MBA tuition numbers are listed in the tables below. This includes textbooks which are all online, plus other fees. Some fees may not be included, such as the application fee and the graduation fee. Boise State also offers a 15 percent scholarship to qualified applicants.

Additionally, Boise State offers an Experience Scholarship to students with at least five years of full-time professional management experience and who meet other requirements.
