JHU Carey Business School Flexible MBA Programs - Johns Hopkins University

The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School offers a flexible MBA program with eight online specializations: business analytics & risk management; digital marketing; entrepreneurial marketing; entrepreneurship, innovation & technology; financial management; healthcare management, innovation, and technology; investments; and public & private sector leadership. The program is also offered on campus or in a hybrid format.

Students in the online flexible MBA can earn up to three specializations, however, not all specialization courses and electives are offered online.

The flexible online MBA is designed to meet working professionals where they are at, allowing part-time attendance and up to six years to complete the degree. The MBA is designed to graduate business leaders who can address the most difficult problems in society in the areas of healthcare management, financial businesses, real estate and infrastructure, and enterprise risk management. Carey Business School believes there is a new ROI—a “Return on Integrity”—and seeks to produce business leaders who are committed to this goal.

Students in the online flexible MBA have the opportunity to network with local and regional business leaders, lawmakers, physicians, and others throughout their classes. In addition, courses offer both traditional and project-based instruction to provide a wide range of learning opportunities. Alumni of the Carey MBA have gone on to work in leadership roles with Guggenheim Partners, AT&T, Merkle, Clinovations, Exelon, and many other established companies.

Online MBA students must take one residency course that includes a 2-day onsite session, with other optional residency courses available.

Johns Hopkins University is located in Baltimore, Maryland, and the online MBA program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

What to Expect from a Flexible MBA at JHU

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the online flexible MBA must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must submit an online application and fee, official transcripts from previous schools, a resume, one letter of recommendation, two essays, and GRE/GMAT test scores. Although the GRE/GMAT is required for admission, a waiver is available for qualified applicants to the part-time program. In addition, at least two years of professional work experience are required for admission.

International students must provide proof of English language proficiency through acceptable TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE test scores. All transcripts must have a course-by-course evaluation by an approved agency.

Study Plan: Most students in the flexible MBA take two courses per semester. Courses are offered in eight-week terms. The program can be completed in 2.5 years, but most students take 3.5 years and have up to six years to complete it. Students may begin courses in the fall, spring, or summer. The program is offered on-site, online, or as a hybrid program.

Curriculum: The online flexible MBA consists of 54 credits, including 20 business foundation credits and 34 credits of electives. Students may earn up to three specializations by fulfilling 10 credits in each specialization, however, this is optional. Students following a general path may choose courses from any of the specializations.

Online Experience: Courses for the online flexible MBA are mostly asynchronous but do include some synchronous activities. JHU online courses use a combination of Blackboard and Adobe Connect for online courses. This program has specific computer requirements. Students must have a webcam, up-to-date virus protection, and a microphone. Students will also need to install several programs on their computers, have adequate internet speed, and have full administrator access to their computers (note that some work computers do not allow this).

There are also other computer specifications for online students through the Carey Business School. Due to the types of programs used, not all may be available for Mac, so Mac users may need a loaner computer during specific courses. Online students have access to academic advising, student services, library services, technical assistance, and information technology services.

On-Site Requirements: Online students must take one course with a mandatory residency, including a 2-day onsite residency. Other optional residency courses will be offered during the program, and students are welcome to visit campus and participate in graduation.
