JHU Carey Business School Flexible MBA Programs - Johns Hopkins University

The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School offers a flexible MBA program with three online concentrations: financial businesses, healthcare management, and leading organizations. The program is also offered on campus or in a hybrid format (other concentrations are available on campus). Students in the online flexible MBA can choose one of the three concentrations with 12 additional credits of electives, or two of the three concentrations to complete their degree.

The flexible online MBA is designed to meet working professionals where they’re at allowing part-time attendance and up to six years to complete the degree. The MBA is designed to graduate business leaders who can address the most difficult problems in society in the areas of healthcare management, financial businesses, real estate and infrastructure, and enterprise risk management. Carey Business School believes there is a new ROI—a “Return on Integrity”—and seeks to produce business leaders who are committed to this goal.

Students in the online flexible MBA have the opportunity to network with local and regional business leaders, lawmakers, physicians, and others throughout their classes. In addition, courses offer both traditional and project-based instruction to provide a wide range of learning opportunities. Alumni of the Carey MBA have gone on to work in leadership roles with Guggenheim Partners, AT&T, Merkle, Clinovations, Exelon, and many other established companies. Johns Hopkins University is located in Baltimore, Maryland.

What to Expect from a Flexible MBA at JHU

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the online flexible MBA must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must submit an online application and fee, official transcripts from previous schools, a resume, one letter of recommendation, two essays, and GRE/GMAT test scores. Although the GRE/GMAT is required for admission, a waiver is available for qualified applicants to the part-time program. In addition, at least two years of professional work experience is required for admission.
International students must provide proof of English language proficiency acceptable TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE test scores. All transcripts must have a course-by-course evaluation by an approved agency.

Study Plan: Most students in the flexible MBA take two courses per semester. Courses are offered in eight-week terms. The program can be completed in 2.5 years, but most students take 3.5 years and have up to six years to complete it. Students may begin courses in the fall, spring, or summer. The program is offered on-site, online, or as a hybrid program.

Curriculum: The online flexible MBA consists of 54 credits including 30 business foundation credits, 12 concentration credits, and 12 credits of electives or a second concentration. As noted above, only the financial businesses, healthcare management, and leading organizations concentrations are offered online.

Business foundation courses include: business communication; business law; negotiation; business leadership and human values; the firm and the macro-economy; accounting and financial reporting; leadership in organizations; economics for decision making; decision models; corporate finance; business leadership and human values; information systems; marketing management; statistical analysis; investments operations management

Sample electives include: cybersecurity; wealth management; design thinking; entrepreneurial ventures; evaluating healthcare innovations; data analytics; real estate funds and portfolio management; global strategy; corporate governance

Online Experience: Courses for the online flexible MBA are mostly asynchronous, but do include some synchronous activities. JHU online courses use a combination of Blackboard and Adobe Connect for online courses. This program has specific computer requirements. Students must have a webcam, up-to-date virus protection, and a microphone. Students will also need to install several programs on their computers, have broadband internet of at least 5 MBPS, and have full administrator access to their computer (note that some work computers do not allow this). There are also other computer specifications through the Carey Business School for online students. Due to the types of programs used, not all may be available for Mac, so Mac users may need a loaner computer during specific courses. Online students have access to academic advising, student services, library services, technology assistance, and information technology services.

On-Site Requirements: During online sections of the courses negotiation, business communication, and leadership in organizations, students are required to attend three on-campus residencies. The negotiation residency lasts 1.5 days. The other residencies last three days. Students participate in instruction and activities as well as networking with peers, faculty, JHU alumni, and business leaders. Students are also welcome to visit campus anytime and participate in graduation.
